Technology addictions are also known as internet addictions or digital addictions. Most times, people overlook them because of the acceptance society has placed on using digital devices. Loved ones may not even know if a family member has an addiction problem, for it seems they are tending to vital tasks or work. Yet, they are hiding behind their screens. People who are addicted to their work are in most cases praised as hard workers. Having a good work ethic is admirable. But when someone is dependent on their work, problems start to arise. Using work as an escape can result in poor relationships, mental health, and the general well-being can suffer too. Work addiction may seem different from digital addiction, but technological issues arise associated with work addiction, especially for those doing office-related work or those in executive-level positions.

Social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and others are highly addictive. YouTube too can be grouped in this category. These platforms are very engaging, causing an individual’s brain to release feel-good neurotransmitters. Most provide the follow, like, or comment engagement that makes you keep wanting more. Social media can invoke a false sense of social engagement similar to social gaming, leaving individuals feeling alone and isolated. Therefore, people fight off boredom and fend off loneliness by constantly binge-watching videos, refreshing feeds, and endless scrolling on social media feeds. Plus, there is the constant fear of missing out. Notably, social media addictions such as using filters, taking photo selfies, force you to hyper-focus on appearance. As a result, it can lead to plastic surgery addiction or body dysmorphia.

4. Online sexual addiction 

Also known as pornography addiction, it involves a compulsive and obsessive watching of porn, coinciding with excessive masturbation and emotional dependency on porn. An individual suffering from porn addiction is due to sex life being less satisfying. Or they have little to no interest in real sexual engagement. Because of this, porn addiction is a reason for deteriorating real-life relationships. Plus, excessive porn usage results in feelings of guilt, shame, sadness, and frustration. 

5. Online shopping addiction

People having this addiction are also known to have a compulsive buying disorder. It is a behavioral addiction involving compulsive and impulsive buying of goods and services online. Unfortunately, online shopping addiction is a way to feel good and induce pleasure for a short while. Also, it is a way to evade boredom and negative emotions. Sometimes it is not about the purchasing but more about the browsing experience before purchasing.

Thus, addiction is a huge negative effect of technology on society, and people must know when to take a tech detox or learn the signs earlier to avoid falling into it. Others like online gambling addiction is now a diagnosable mental health disorder, and it has the highest rates of suicide.
